Côtes d'Armor - is on the northern coast of Brittany, it looks towards Southern England and the English channel. Brittany has a mild maritime climate, winters are not harsh and summer temperatures do not become stifling in the height of summer. Average temperatures in summer reach an extremely pleasant 25 degrees Centigrade, often with a slight sea breeze.
From the Emerald to the Pink Granite Coast, it has the longest coastline in France covering some 350km, it is a very popular tourist area due to its proximity to the channel ports of St Malo and Roscoff. The Bretagne peninsula offers a variety of amazing landscapes, alternating headlands, beaches, harbours and inlets. It is a beautiful rugged coastline with steep cliffs and is dotted with quaint, medieval towns. Each part of the coastline has its own identity, delicate blending of colours and shapes of the rocks and the sea. Its clear water wavers between blue and green, its rocks of a warm orangy pink and the presence of megaliths have inspired and given their names full of promises to these borderlines.
Côtes-du-Nord was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Brittany. Its name was changed in 1990 to Côtes-d'Armor (ar mor meaning the sea).

Plouër sur Rance - La Moinerie - Between St Malo/Dinard (with beaches) and the medieval port of Dinan, La Moinerie is the pair of terraced fisherman's cottages in the centre of the photo - the ones with the pair of white dormer windows. It is situated at the end of a winding country lane and faces the beautiful River Rance. Entrance to the house is from the lane to the rear and there is a gravelled area for parking 2-3 cars. The rest of the garden is put to lawn and runs along the back of the cottage. Finistère (Dept 29) - Finistère is the region on the west coast of Brittany, It has a wild and rocky Brittany coast, pointing towards the Atlantic ocean. Summers have a mild climate, dry and cool, ideal for walking, cycling and generally relaxing in the laid back atmosphere. Winters are cold, with average temperatures getting down to around 5C.
There are more then 852 thousand people living in Finistere in 296 towns.
Most of Finistère is low-lying, at about 100m abgitesove sea-level, but there are ranges of hills that run through the centre of Finistère, the Montagne Noires and the Arrée range. Inland, between farmlands, are moors and heathlands with gorse. The coastline ranges from granite headlands with crashing seas below the cliffs in the north-west, to bays and inlets with sandy beaches. Around the coast are ports and small fishing communities, offering many interesting and picturesque places to visit.
There are many great towns and villages in Finistère where ancient stones, historic architecture and magnificent Finistere villas can be seen, including the destinations of Audierne, Quimper and Crozon. It also had an important fishing industry with boats once travelling from the famous ports of Brest to the Terre Neuve region of Canada.

Gites in Ille et Vilaine (35)
Ille-et-Villaine (Dept 35) - The most eastern part of Britanny and the one with the shortest coast line adding up to 72 kilometres, this and St Malo to Mont Saint Michel (Normandy) and is known as the Emerald Coast. It has a gentle maritime climate, there are not huge variations in temperature and the rain, whilst frequent, is not heavy.
The department is named after its two main rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine, whose confluence is in Rennes, the capital of the department and of the region.
The population stands at 908 thousand people (as of January 2006), 353 towns and villages including 8 towns with a population of more than 10,000: Rennes, Saint-Malo, Vitré, Fougères, Bruz, Cesson-Sévigné, Dinard and Redon
The old walled town of St Malo is one of the France's great attractions, its rampart walls hide a charming town known for good restaurants and pavement cafés. There is quite a lot to see in St. Malo alone and you can walk along the dramatic ramparts and colourful pavement cafés in St Malo.
There are superb oysters from Cancale on the Emerald Coast, this first became famous for its oysters which were supplied to royal tables in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the seafront of the "oyster capital" is packed with restaurants offering the pied de cheval flat variety, sometimes so substantial they are eaten with a knife and fork. The town is not as pretty as some, but the scale and variety of the seafood make a very pleasant lunchtime visit. The walk from the famous Cancale rock up to the Pointe du Grohin gives superb views of Mont St Michel on a clear day.

The coast line of the Morbihan is very attractive with rocks, cliffs and sandy beaches The summers are warm temperatures averaging around 25C, benefiting from the effects of the Gulf Stream with its own microclimate and with warmer seas and protection of the northern winds by the Noires hills.
There are over 623 thousand people living in Morbihan spread out over 264 towns.
One is not entirely sure how many islands lie in the Gulf of Morbihan. This is mainly due to the differing definitions of an island. It is a piece of land which is cut off from the mainland at high tide considered an island? Because of this, there are somewhere between 40 and 365 islands in the Gulf.
Morbihan has a long and fascinating history. The huge number of menhirs and dolmens in this area make the département one of the most impressive megalithic sites in the world - said to more than match Stonehenge. The megalithic World Heritage site of Carnac is celebrated as one of the finest with passage tombs and rock art, and is thought to date back as far as 5000BC. There are also castles from the Hundred Years War at Josselin and Pontivy, and the World War II submarine pens in Lorient.
