Places to enjoy
Jugon les Lacs, a 10-minute drive away, is a renowned tourist destination for water sports, walking, cycling and angling. Catamarans, windsurfing boards, canoes and pedalos are all available to hire. Lessons can be pre-booked with the sailing school, affiliated to L'Ecole Français de Voile, France's national sailing school. During the summer months they organise night time canoe trips on the moonlit lake. Anglers have the option of a 70 hectare lake or a 250 hectare lake to fish. The smaller Jugon Lac is shallower and the fishing is said to be easy and plentiful, home to Carp, Tench, Perch and Pike. Arguenon Lac is home to Pike, Roach, Common Bream, Eel and Perch.
Those who enjoy taking in the scenery from dry land can hire mountain bikes or simply meander around the lakes. There is an outdoor swimming pool open weekends in May and June and everyday during July and August. The town itself is very picturesque, considered a “Petite Cité de Caractère”.
Dinan, has bags of character, a medieval walled town dating back certainly to 1123 and possibly to 1060, it is synonymous with art and steeped in history.
The Fête des Ramparts takes place biennial, in July, a festival which celebrates its history. Dinan is a hive of activity all year round, with a big open-air market every Thursday and many fine eateries. It is a pleasure to wander through the streets and squares bordered by timber framed and the newer build stone buildings! It's a town with a rich and vibrant pavement café culture, an important part of every day life in France. A lesser-known treat is the fabulous handmade chocolate shop, to be found in the centre of Dinan, it is truly a gourmet experience and only 25 minutes drive from our house! With so much to do we recommend you visit www.dinan-tourisme.com
Lamballe is a bustling commercial centre year round with a superb park garden in the centre, a delightful spot to picnic, a favourite French pastime. The important Lamballe Haras, built in 1825, can be visited most times of the year, except January until mid February. By the early 1900s it was the biggest stud farm in France when it accommodated up to 400 stallions. These days it accommodates in the region of 75 stallions at any one time. www.haraspatrimoine.com A market takes over the town centre on Thursdays. If a trip to Paris appeals, you can take the train from Lamballe, the journey takes around 3 hours as the TGV operates on this line, though not all trains stop in Lamballe. All of them stop in Rennes.
St Brieuc is a major commercial centre and university town on the coast, it has a mix of old and new buildings, a good place for gift shopping having many one-off boutiques selling everything from kitchen items to clothes. The open-air market takes place every Saturday morning.
Moncontour, like Jugon les Lacs, has the status “Petite Cité de Caractère”. Set on the top of a hill, it was a very wealthy linen centre in the 1600s & 1700s and today is a delightful place to walk around with a mixture of stone and timber framed buildings. www.moncontour.com
Rennes, is the capital of Brittany and a lively university town with timber houses and cobbled streets in the old town. Good shopping and splendid outdoor cafés from where you can watch the world go by. Before you go, have a look at www.tourisme-rennes.com
Beautiful beaches with breath taking scenery are to be found all along the coast. Cap Frehel, a protected site of national beauty, and the nearby fort La Latte are a dream for photographers and ramblers. It's a coastline of blue flag beaches, frequented by surfers and numerous sea birds. There are 7 beaches to choose from at St-Cast-le-Guildo, 35 minutes drive from our house and many others to explore.
