AROUND THE AREA
The gite is just 3km from the pretty village of Gouarec, where the river Blavet meets the Nantes-Brest Canal. The village has all amenities, a supermarket, bank, post office, and restaurants. The canal towpath is ideal for walking or cycling, winter and summer.
Close by is the Abbey of Bon Repos, situated on the side of the canal; this picturesque, historic Cistercian monastery is a delightful picnic spot and on Sunday mornings has a small produce and craft market. Each summer the Abbey hosts the largest Son et Lumiere in the area.
Ten minutes drive by car is the Lac du Guerledan, the largest lake in Brittany, with beaches & watersport facilities and an excellent outdoor centre with over 10 kms of cycle track at Mur de Bretagne.
FURTHER AFIELD
Brittany is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline and ancient towns and from our Gite much of historic Brittany is within easy reach.
St Malo is a living museum where you leave your car outside and walk through cobbled streets or stroll the ramparts for views of the yacht dotted Atlantic. It has a sandy beach with rock pools where kids can safely paddle. Just upriver is the medieval town of Dinan with its 13 Century cathedral and quaint half-timbered houses. You can take a cruise on the Rance estuary from here. Further west lays the Gothic abbey of Mont St Michel cut off from the main land at high tide.
Brittany’s south coast, the Gulf of Morbihan is a maze of rocky bays and sandy coves. Carnac is famed for its megalithic remains from the Neolithic period In addition to 2,792 menhirs, the area is studded with burial places, semicircles and tumuli.
Quimper, to the west, is famous for its handmade pottery (faience) which has been produced here since the 17th century and a visit to the workshops is not to be missed. Close by is Pont-Aven, a postcard pretty fishing village made famous by Paul Gauguin
Ile de Brehat is on the northern coast, and you will find this beautiful island something to remember. About one and a half hours drive away but allow the day. A short boat trip takes you onto the island where no cars are allowed and even the police ride bikes. Hire a bike and see the rugged pink coast, a fantastic day.
WALKING & CYCLING
The whole of the area around the Lac du Guerledan and the River Blavet is a treasure trove of discovery for the walker or cyclist.
The Blavet area is suitable for all types of walkers. There are easy level walks along the towpath or more demanding hikes in the hills that surround the lake. Many walks are circular and paths are well signposted. A short walk from the house will take you past some spectacular dolmen, the area is also rich in fauna and flora and often deer, otters, heron and kingfishers can be spotted.
Cyclists can follow many of the same walking paths, and we can provide a sheet of suggestions ranging from an easy 10kms wobble to a more energetic 40kms. Where you have to use the road, as in most areas of France, rural roads are usually very quiet. Adult and child's bikes can be hired locally by the day or half day, including trailers for very young children or, of course, bring your own.
For those of you who would like to take part in guided cycling tours, which includes the use of 21 gear hybrid bikes, we can arrange this through Rambling Rides For more information on walking in the areas please check out Brittany Walks, a useful website that can also offer details of guided walks, and we would like to recommend 'Central Brittany: Coast to Coast', by Penny Allen. As well as places to see it has 12 full walks with maps and directions.
